New application layering and persistence choices in Spring Roo 1.2

Java enterprise applications can take many shapes and forms. Depending on their requirements, developers need to decide which specific architectural layers their application needs. Up until now, Spring Roo has taken a pragmatic approach to reduce the often unnecessary complexity introduced by service facade, repository or DAO layers. The newly-released Spring Roo 1.2.0.M1 (see announcement) includes frequently requested support for architectural layers which can be tailored to the needs of the application. This article provides an overview of Roo's new service and repository layer features.

Spring Roo 1.1.5 Released

Dear Spring Community,

We’re happy to announce the availability of Spring Roo 1.1.5 (download here). Spring Roo is a rapid application development tool for Java, allowing you to create full enterprise applications in just minutes.

The new release features over 95 improvements and bug fixes since the 1.1.4 release. The next release of Roo will be 1.2.0.RC1 where new features such as application layering support and a new JSF UI option will be introduced.

The reference guide is also included in the download ZIP.

Introduction To Spring Roo Screencast

After our mad dash to the final release of Spring Roo 1.0.0 on New Year's Eve, many users have asked for an introductory screencast.

In this 5 minute screencast you will see how to:

  • Develop a simple "contact manager application" using the Roo shell
  • Import and edit the project our free IDE, SpringSource Tool Suite (STS)
  • Run the Roo-provided integration tests in STS
  • Modify the application and understand ITD round-trip support
  • Deploy to your IDE's web container
  • Use the scaffolded web user interface
  • "Push-in refactor" to move source code between Java source files and ITDs
  • Remove Roo from the project
